In this collection, black and white dominated, with punches of bright purples and cobalt blues punctuating every few looks. There was a lot of peekabo lace and some peplum, and of course, plenty of the intricately gathered, beautifully organic shapes for which Lacroix is famous. I love the exuberant use of color and texture; the opulence and the unexpected details, like a white tank bodice peeking out from beneath a black bouffant puff of a mini dress.

Chanel's Fall 2009 collection gets a shot of toughness from black winged eyeliner, lace tights, and fingerless gloves. I love the look of a prim boucle suit artfully tousled with a smattering of rock n' roll accessories. Like many collections this season, Chanel played with textures and volume, incorporating sheers, beading, feathers and ruffles into its signature layered, ladies-who-lunch look. I especially love the stark contrast of black and white and punches of glitter from embellished necklines and lapels.

This worldly collection incorporates middle eastern and tribal elements like headscarfs, piles of gold jewelry and coin chains, harem pants, and sari-like caftans decorated with sharp, geometric studs and jewels. These exotic pieces are tempered by modern strong-shouldered dresses and blazers adorned with spiky pyramid studs and softly twisted into avant-garde shapes. A great (albeit extreme) exercise in incorporating indigenous elements into a modern wardrobe without veering into camp or costume.

This collection consists exclusively of bridal looks, from the classic and demure to the slightly more unconventional. For me, wedding dresses are tough because you want to strike a balance between fashionable and timeless. You want the dress to reflect your immediate sense of style but still look fresh in pictures 20 years later, which means going too trendy may come back to haunt you like the day-glo rouge and bruise-purple eyeshadow caked on my mother's face at her 1981 marriage to my dad. Anyways, I especially loved Saab's use of texture and embelllishment, like her 60s-tinged sheer column dresses with explosions of flowers and hemlines finished with rosettes and feathers. For the most part, her designs are stylish enough to be chic both in the moment and in albums years later (save some of the wilder designs, like a micro mini boucle skirt suit with a bra top, high-waisted white skinny jeans, and few boldly asymmetrical bodices, which may lead to some WTF moments when browsing photos later on down the line.)
