"Julie Cockburn an artist from London creates fantastical small worlds with labor intensive paper cut sculptures. A graduate of both the Chelsea School of Art and the Central St Martins School of Art and Design, she had a focus on sculpture. These explosions of butterflies hatching from books are my personal favorites."
"What draws a viewer into the sculptural work of Leo Sewell? First, when seen from a distance they sparkle and shine with color as they depict a very recognizable form whether it's a smart looking Terrier, a little Piglet, or loveable Teddy. Secondly, upon closer inspection, what's seen is an overload of information generated by the dense assembly of many many bits and pieces representing the flotsam and detritus of modern life. These forms are beautifully made as pocket size parts (key chains, wooden knobs, lockets, badges, plastic toys, and infinite "whatnots") are melded together to make creatures that resonate with life."
"...some new wall sculptures I refer to them as "Moments" in reference to the Baroque ideal of capturing "a moment in time" I like to think of them as caught in the act of floating through space."
"My pieces articulate life in transformation, growth, inevitable deterioration and regeneration. Using an aluminum bowl as a three dimentional canvass results in a sculptural form that can be viewed in several way depending on placement and lighting. In some pieces the cast of the shadow is as important as the object itself. Working with several layers of color on a deeply etched , hammered or hand brushed surface I attempt to narrow the line between delicacy and durability. My intention is to convey a visual impression of fragility grounded in the inherent strength of the material used."
