the author of this book argues that melancholia is essential for any culture and its art. while i consider myself a generally happy person, i think i agree with him. this would be an interesting read.
i picked up this book in anthropologie and it's very interesting, indeed -- little tidbits of advice from an experienced ad-man. it's small and very well designed. (and a lot better than what i'm making it out to be, lol.)
i picked up this book a couple days ago (out of frustration for my own 'overachiever'-ness, but that's a different story), and i am fully engrossed in it. a journalist followed a group of high school seniors and junors caught in the frenzy of APs, SATs, GPAs, and college admissions, and it's written in such a way that makes you really empathize with these kids and what they're going through. plus, the book is slightly personally relevant -- these kids go to walt whitman high school located in bethesda, MD, which is fairly close to where i attend college.
this book was used in my persuasion and propaganda class today. with its tongue-in-cheek chapter titles and numerous citations, it's an entertaining, interesting, and informative read...essential for my plan to take over the world. buahahaha. :)
