The best slow cooker received a perfect score for quality of food; corned beef was tender and juicy and potatoes and carrots were fully cooked yet retained good texture, while lesser units produced overcooked, dry meat and soggy vegetables. The unit simmered beef stew to 150° F after 2 1/2 hours, while other models registered only 137° F--3° F below the minimum internal temperature recommended by the USDA.
