The work of Stephen Burks, Parallel Shelving (2005) is easy to assemble and surprisingly sturdy for a lightweight structure. The design packs flat, which saves on shipping materials and costs. To assemble the shelving, unfold the five vertical panels that are hinged together, and then slide in the shelves to lock the panels in place. The final step is to drop in a few screws to prevent the shelves from sliding back and forth. Parallel Shelving is finished on all sides and can be used as a room divider. Optional bookends further the functionality of this design. Burks, and his New York studio, Readymade Projects, have provided the design direction for retail interiors and industrial design, as well as lighting systems and furniture.
