Item Description

Jamaicas Blue Mountain coffee has, for more than a hundred years, had the enviable distinction of fetching the highest prices in the world. A quintessential coffee of rich flavor and aroma, full body and moderate acidity, it is deemed by the coffee experts of the world to possess all characteristics in perfect balance in the cup. At the eastern end of the island, The Grand Ridge of the Blue Mountains runs east to west and soars to a height of 7,402 feet. On the cool and misty slopes of the Blue Mountains, beans of rare quality and aroma are grown at elevations in excess of 4,000 feet where the plants are shrouded in fog for several hours each day. This causes the coffee beans to mature slowly. As a result, the crop, from bloom to harvest, lasts approximately ten months. This is nearly twice as long as coffee grown in other countries where a crop typically lasts five to six months. Due to this, a typical crop must be picked over a minimum of eight times; making the labor component double what it is in other countries. When growers in other countries switched to newer high yielding varieties of coffee Arabica plants like caturra and catuai, Jamaica stuck with the old-fashioned typica variety. The coffee is processed at the historic Wallenford mill and shipped in the traditional 154 lb. basswood barrels that are the signature of the Jamaican coffee industry. (Jamaica is the only country in the world that packs its coffee in barrels rather than burlap bags.) In order to purchase Jamaicas world famous Blue Mountain coffee one must apply to the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica for permission to do so. The applicant is rigorously investigated and, if the findings are suitable, granted the status of Approved Importer. Since 1988, J. Martinez & Company has been an approved importer of Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee. Medium Roast, Whole Bean
