don quixote--one of the greatest creations of fiction ever! miguel de cervantes, the author of the famous book, completed it in the year 1615, 5 years before the plymouth colony was founded on the east coast of the then unexplored future usa! cervantes wrote the book as a parable or view in story fashion of the spanish society he lived in, with the aim to point out the current errors in action. probably to his surprise, don quixote turned out to be a huge success, and in modern times apparently is second only to the bible for being the most published literary work in the world! it also is classified as the world's best work of fiction, courtesy of an international survey among worldwide writers in 2002. the basic theme is that the elderly nobleman don quixote, sets out on his steed rosinante to seek adventure in his land. accompanied by his faithful(and sometimes argumentative) squire sancho panza, they travel and meet multitudes of adventures. a few of the well known ones are his adventure attacking the windmills thinking them to be giants, seeing flocks of sheep as armies of men, and a plethora of humorous incidents occurring at different inns. dox quixote's imagination blinds him to reality because it is so vivid--after reading book after book of chivalry and previous times, he finally believes he is in that era once again, and sets out to right the wrongs, and face all the adventures that cross his path! of course, with his overexcited imagination, adventures don't take long to come--windmills that look like giants, and everything else conspire to give him an eventful journey indeed! in this don quixote theme chess set, the favorite characters are brought back to life again in these great examples of chessmen! the king is the don himself, quixote; the queen is the lady to whom he is devoted, dulcinea de tobosa, and for whom he does battle for. however, she is actually a figment of his imagination! the bishops represent a few of the priests that the don came across, and usually attacked in characteristic quixotic fashion! the knight is none other than his aging horse rosinante, demonstrating unusual agility rearing to it's hind feat; the castle features the most famous building in the whole story--the windmills of infamous fame. and, last, but most certainly not least, the pawns represent his faithful and devoted attendant: sancho panza. all together, this lovely don quixote themed chess set is a great finish to any place! with beautiful coloring, and a red vs blue theme sifting through, they are sure to be a delight to use, not to mention the tremendous history contained in them! the bases of the pieces are color coded handily: the red side has light brown bases, and the blue side has forest-green bases. dimensions: chess set pieces: 3-1/4" king's; 1-1/8" bases.
