Noli Me Tangere is the most celebrated work of Jos Rizal. The novel presents Philippine society in the 19th century, and was written while Rizal was engaged in his political activities, working to free the Pacific island nation from the Spanish empire. The book was written to denounce the abuses of the Spanish colonial government and its religious institutions. The story portrays the ruling social classes, through love affairs and reflections on historical realities.
