She first made her mark in 1977 as a member of the seminal San Francisco punk combo the Avengers, who opened for the Sex Pistols at the group's infamous January 1978 Winterland coup de grace. Nearly two decades after the Avengers recorded their only EP, Houston finally got her major-label contract. Cut You, Houston's Reprise debut, is a collection of six new tracks and eight older originals rerecorded for the album. The sound, which went from a scream to a whisper after she left the Avengers, has been beefed up, but the focus remains on the complex emotions that pervade Houston's lyrics.--Steven Stolder
