Are you looking to purchase a new dress? You’ve got a lot of options. Start by matching your dress to the occasion where you’ll be wearing it. For instance, you wouldn’t want to wear a sundress to a formal ball, or a floor-length gown on a long plane trip. There are thousands of different occasions where you might wear a dress, but for most purposes, you’ll be choosing from three basic categories: casual dresses, semi-formal dresses, and formal dresses. By figuring out just what kind of dress you’re looking for, you’ll be well on your way to finding a perfect match.
Not all dresses are made alike. Casual dresses tend to be made out of fabrics like cotton or polyester and can be short or long. Often, they’ll be designed for comfort and have a loose fit. Sundresses fall under this category, but casual dresses aren’t just for summer. For cooler months, sweater dresses can be cute. Semi-formal dresses are great for occasions that require you to be just a little bit more “dressed up.” Cocktail dresses and halter dresses fall under this category. They can be short or long, and are usually made of fabrics like satin, sometimes mixed with polyester or other synthetics. Formal dresses are usually reserved for special occasions such as receptions and balls. If you’re in high school, you’ll want a formal dress if you are attending the prom. They are more likely to be long and to be made of expensive fabrics like silk. Because of this, formal dresses generally cost more than casual or semi-formal dresses.
If at all possible, try on the dress before you purchase it. Everybody’s body is different. A dress that looks amazing on the hanger might not look as great when you’re wearing it! Or perhaps it looks all right but is uncomfortable. Maybe it’s too long and you find yourself tripping over the hem when you walk. Trying on a dress allows you to catch these problems before you make a purchase. When shopping online, however, it’s not usually possible to try dresses on. Some sellers have return policies that let you send a dress back if it doesn’t fit correctly, but not everyone will allow this. Besides, it’s rather time-consuming to mail the item back and forth. You can save a lot of time by taking your measurements accurately. Most online sellers will list the measurements of clothing items, and dresses are no exception. Don’t go by sizes alone! Sizes of women’s clothing vary drastically. The same woman might wear a size 2 in one item and a size 8 in another. Measurements, by contrast, are precise and will help you much more when figuring out which dresses will fit you best. The three measurements you will need to know are bust, waist, and hips. Bust is the measurement around your chest, including the breasts; the waist measurement is taken near your navel; and the hip measurement is taken, unsurprisingly, around your hips. Once you have your measurements, look for dresses which are slightly bigger (otherwise, the dress will probably be too tight).
As with any other item, price is a consideration when shopping for dresses. Different people are able to spend different amounts of money on clothes. Before buying any dress, shop around to compare prices. That way, you won’t end up spending more money than you have to for an identical item. More important than price, anyway, is quality. It can be worth paying more to get a high-quality garment that looks better or is more durable. But a flimsy dress that costs thousands of dollars is worth a lot less than a well-made dress that costs less. This can be hard to determine – often you won’t know if something is low quality until something goes wrong – but there are a few things you can do to check quality. If given the opportunity to look at a dress in person, take advantage of it. Is the stitching well-done, or does it look clumsy? Are there any tears or other defects? If so, look elsewhere.
Once the practical considerations are out of the way, it’s time to get creative. There are so many other factors that go into dress shopping that depend on personal taste. Consider color! Dresses come in every color of the rainbow and some outside of it. Do you like pastels, or would you rather be seen in bright colors? Dark jewel tones such as sapphire, burgundy or deep purple always look sophisticated. White dresses aren’t just for weddings and look particularly good during the summer. The little black dress is a classic that will never go out of style. Not all dresses, of course, come in solid colors. Patterns can make dresses exciting and fun! Here are just a few suggestions. Floral prints are a perennial favorite, and especially liven up sundresses. Polka dots are particularly trendy right now and can give you a cute retro look. You can also find dresses with stripes or other funky geometric prints. Details can take an ordinary dress and turn it into something truly special. The possibilities are almost endless, but here are a few you might want to look for: lace, ribbons, ruching, asymmetric hems, ruffles, or bows. There are enough dresses out there that it’s worth it to take the time to find a dress with the perfect details for you.
Take a look at the seller’s return policy before you purchase a dress, just in case. If something isn’t quite right, you can always send it back. Hopefully this won’t happen, though, and you’ll be ready to go out and show the world how great your new dress looks. Good luck!
